Teaching grammar

Recently, I have been thinking about how to teach grammar effectively to my S.2 students. It is always easier and more convenient for us teachers to adopt the deductive approach, that is, explaining the grammar rules and giving out exercises. However, from my past experience, it is often hard for students to apply them naturally in their writing or speech. Therefore, when I taught comparatives and superlatives in the first unit, I made an effort to use the inductive approach. I asked them questions (with graphic aids on PowerPoint slides as shown below) like "Who is the tallest in or class?", "Who has the biggest school bag?", "Who has the smallest eraser?" to raise their awareness in the superlative form (-est). In fact, they were eager to tell me the form as the lesson ended. The next day, I asked them several more similar questions like "Who is the most popular student?" and "What is the most exciting film you have ever seen?" to let them know when to use "the most" before an adjective. So far, my students have learnt quite well, so in the future, I will continue to use the inductive approach to teach grammar.
